No matter how you treat the iconic images of cans of tomato soup, Andy Warhol cats are beautiful. They appeared in 1954 in the form of a limited book edition, as we now say - the "artbook", the "artist's book".

Even then, everyone loved cats, so with the ideological support of his mother, Andy took up an unusual project. In 1954, the book saw the light of the "25 cats named Sam and one blue cat" with Warhol drawings and inscriptions made by mother's hand. True, there are 16 cats, and the circulation instead of the declared 190 was about 150. In addition to signatures, there is no text in the book.

The "highlight" of the edition is that Warhol seals personally painted with watercolors, so the price of 10 thousand dollars per sheet with Sam from such a book (and 15 with a blue cat) is more than justified. Even identical cat silhouettes have different colors in different instances!
By the way, reprints from limited editions can be purchased cheaper for 600-800 dollars, and the book reprinted in 1987 cost $ 75. Well, then, in the mid-50s, the author gave the books just like that for Christmas, sometimes with a kitten: Sam’s posterity needed to be attached

Known and the book of the mother of Warhol's "Holy Cats", where it comes to the life of the "first woman" Hester in heaven, and all the drawings are made by Julia Warhol. The original from the limited edition of this artbook can be found for 3-5 thousand dollars, a reprint is sold in the Warhol "senior cats": on Amazon, the price for two books in a single case is from $ 200

It is interesting that Andy's nephew, James Warhol, also did not stay away from the cat's theme: he wrote illustrated the book for children, "Cats of my uncle Andy."
